Their size determines the color. The larger the radius of each nanocrystal, the more red the color is. The actual nanocrystal can be made up of lots of different things, Cadmium and Selenium/Indium and Phosphide/Zinc and Sulfur to name a few. Cadmium Selenide dots have always performed best because of their chemical characteristics. I imagine they lowered the cadmium content and alloyed another sort of metal in there as well. Fine-tuning probably got it to the performance metrics they're looking for.
