Intel spent $16.7B on Altera primarily for data-center.
I think there's something there.

Intel has no idea what algorithms the cloud providers need, so they offer a flexible accelerator fabric.

Each vendor will have their own niche applications. Google made a very interesting choice going ASIC given the CPU/GPU/FPGA alternatives.
They made a point to mention that FPGA was not as efficient.
