Hollywood superhero movies have become massive sure-fire franchises that have yet to show any signs of fading. On top of opening to huge box office numbers world wide, comic book movies have also dominated Bollywood. The most recent news being that of Bollywood superstar Varun Dhawan voicing the character of Captain America in the Indian dubbed version of ‘Captain America: Civil War’. But now, there’s a Bollywood movie in development that features an original Indian comic book character.
Chakra is an Indian comic book character created by Stan Lee.

Responsible for creating iconic characters such as Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and The Avengers, Lee created the character of Raju Rai, who goes on to become a superhero named Chakra. A teenage genius from Mumbai, India, Rai uses his intellect to create a suit that is able to tap into the mystical energies of the the universe, and dubs himself Chakra as he fights crime in India. Partnering with Phantom Films from India, the comic will now be adapted into a live action Bollywood feature film entitled ‘Chakra The Invincible’.

Stan Lee’s POW Entertainment and comic book company Graphic India have come together with Phantom Films, known as being the production house of acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap (‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’, ‘Dev D’) to create an adult version of the character for their own Bollywood movie, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Motwane is a Phantom Films veteran having debuted with ‘Udaan‘ which premiered at Cannes International Film Festival. He has since gone on to direct another critical favourite, ‘Lootera‘, a subtle love story.

Bollywood is no stranger to superhero films, although they have been different in tone than the ones that we are familiar with in Hollywood. The biggest superhero film franchise of India, spawning 3 films is ‘Krrish‘, which was inspired by many other Hollywood movies itself. ‘Drona‘ was an original superhero film experiment in Bollywood, which didn’t see any returns from the Box Office. So ‘Chakra The Invincible’ would be Bollywood’s first super hero directly adapted from an original comic book. The character has already spawned an animated film which debuted on the Cartoon Network.

Given the style of films that Phantom Films are associated with, and Motwane’s own tone of films, ‘Chakra‘ seems like it may also be Bollywood first serious superhero films. While the previous attempts have been more blockbuster entertainment films aimed at mainstream audiences and to be commercial successes, this movie could be one that focuses on a more grounded and real superhero that Bollywood hasn’t seen thus far, especially considering the makers involved.

,While no stars have yet been announced, casting rumours include Ranveer Singh in the title character of Raju Rai which is more than likely given director Motwane’s previous relationship with the actor on ‘Lootera’. Singh is also the current Bollywood reigning superstar, with his name attached to almost every major project, so these rumours should be taken with a grain of salt.

‘Chakra: The Invincible’ will be directed by Vikramaditya Motawane, produced by Phantom Films along with POW Entertainment & Graphic India, is just beginning pre-production now.
