Biochar is the carbon left behind when you heat wood or other biomass in a chamber depleted of oxygen. A living plant absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and gives off O2, thus retaining the C (carbon). Biochar is the solid black carbon that was once the C in atmospheric CO2
