Don't forget .....when sequential selling occurs each sell becomes a smaller %age of the total portfolio amount .... and when sequential buying occurs each larger buy becomes a bigger %age of the total portfolio amount as well... <<<---- Those facts will most definitely affect annual return %ages too... You gave a great example Tom buying more shares on the way down, and selling fewer shares on the way up to accomplish the same thing... Also, one or several very active holdings can take over the portfolio too... Which may or may not be your intent... Best regards, Ken
