Let me set the record straight about my publication Daily News Bin

By Bill Palmer
April 6, 2016

Hi, I’m Bill Palmer. I’m the creator, publisher and owner of Daily News Bin. I’ve been an indie journalist for about thirteen years, covering various other fields. I started this site last year and decided to try my hand at political reporting because I couldn’t stand one more day of the false and misleading narratives I kept hearing on cable news, and I decided to fight back. I’ve had the good fortune to find a rather large audience, and a number of people I respect have told me (publicly and privately) that they appreciate my willingness to aim straight for the truth. But it’s also brought some bizarre false claims out of the woodwork by those who don’t care for the truth. So I want to clear up every bit of malarkey that’s been put into circulation about me and Daily News Bin over the past nine months.

I’ve quickly learned that the trouble with reporting on an election from a factual place is that those whose preferred candidates aren’t doing well are going to blame the messenger. In the instance of some of these individuals, they’ll spread the most ridiculous coordinated lies about you and your publication in the hopes of scaring people away from reading it. When you’re a new publication, the bystanders who hear these crazy claims are left unsure what to think. I would prefer to ignore this kind of nonsense, but I tried that approach early on and found that when up against this level of false noise, I have no choice but to persistently fight back. So if you’re here for that reason, let’s shoot down the nonsense point by point:

No, we’re not a “satire” or “fake news” site

For the first few months of our existence, when cable news was routinely reporting state polls as if they were national polls to try to make certain races look more close than they were, we focused on pushing the real poll numbers out there daily. This offended the fans of a certain losing candidate so thoroughly that they took to social media and told everyone who would listen that we were “satire” or “fake news.” They felt that if they could trick enough people into believing it, anything we put in a headline would be ignored. Before long I made a point of publicly pushing back against this lie, so they moved onto the next one.

We are not “owned” or “funded” by anyone

Last fall, these same rather dedicated individuals moved on to their new coordinated lie about us: that we’re secretly being operated or funded by a candidate, campaign, party, or SuperPAC in this election. Anyone who’s taken a look at our rather scrappy looking site can figure out that we’re not “funded” by anyone – and anyone familiar with how indie news sites operate knows that they don’t need external support to begin with. Still, this has become the de facto false claim about us on the part of anyone who resents that we’re reporting on how poorly their preferred candidate is doing.

Yes, we cite sources

Seemingly having run out of good lies, these same individuals have more recently moved on to the false claim that we don’t cite sources. That’s easily disproven. Our articles are full of bold text links to supporting sites and sources, usually in the final paragraph so you can click on them when you’re finished reading. For instance we recently published a story which included source links to an ABC News reporter and an official police department report; those who didn’t want our story to be true still went ahead and claimed that the story had no sources.

More disturbingly, some of these individuals have stalked us around social media. Whenever one of our readers posts a Daily News Bin story on Facebook or Twitter, these trolls show up on cue to begin posting random false claims in the comments section. We only have to fight back against this nonsense because these individuals have wasted so much of their lives obsessively trolling us with these false claims.

Yes, I’m a real person

The claim about us that has gone in and out of fashion is that I’m not a real person and neither are my other writers. On our “About” page we have links to the social media pages of all of our writers, yet this nonsensical claim persists. I keep being told that I don’t exist either. As I said, these trolls ran out of good lies about us awhile ago and are now scraping the bottom of the barrel, yet they persist with just as much enthusiasm. If you’re wondering, that’s me in the picture attached to this article.

No, we’re not secretly based in Panama or Arizona

For months, these trolls have been telling anyone who will listen that Daily News Bin is “secretly based in Panama and therefore is fake news.” I’m not sure why our location would even matter, but I’ve never even been to Panama. These individuals are so dedicated, they even appear to have slapped together a random blog page that “proves” we’re in Panama. Then they spread around that random page as “evidence” that we’re “not real.” More recently, these same trolls have begun passing around some kind of fake mailing address in Arizona and claiming that it’s our headquarters. I trust the fact that they’re now claiming we’re based in Panama and based in Arizona should serve as proof in itself that both claims are false. As always, these absurd false claims are followed by the conclusion “…and that’s why you shouldn’t read Daily News Bin stories.”

It’s all an attempt on their part to keep you from checking us out. If the clinically obsessive behavior of these individuals sounds unbelievable, consider that they regularly hunt down my personal Facebook page so they can throw these false claims at me. The Daily News Bin audience, thousands of whom have become my Facebook friends, tend to have fun putting these trolls in their place when they show up. In certain instances I’ve had to block hundreds of these individuals on the same day. I have no idea where they come from, why they appear to have so much time on their hands, or why they appear so intent on spreading lies about a comparatively unimportant publication like mine instead of getting out there and advocating for whatever candidate they claim to support. Perhaps I should be asking who’s funding them.

When you cover politics, some folks who don’t like what you report are going to come after you personally. It just comes with the territory. My only concern here is making sure the general public is aware that the nonsense these folks keep spreading about Daily News Bin is indeed nonsense. After we’ve been publishing awhile longer, perhaps these trolls will move on and get a life.

In addition to confirming that all of the above false claims are indeed categorically false, I also want to point out the following: if these individuals had any argument to make when it comes to the facts or honesty or sourcing or accuracy of our reporting, they’d attack us on those things instead of making up cartoonish lies about us. But again, because we’re less than a year old and these individuals have been so pitifully persistent in spreading all this nonsense, I wanted to set the record straight once and for all.

If you landed on this page because someone made an absurd claim about us and you wanted to find out the truth, I’m glad you’re here. I recommend checking out our articles [ http://dailynewsbin.com/ ], following our sourcing links, checking our facts, and deciding what to think of our accuracy for yourself. We’ve been growing so quickly that we’re doing the best we can to keep up. We’re trying to get better as we go, so I’m always open to constructive feedback – and despite the persistent claims that I’m somehow not a real person, I’m very easily reachable [ http://dailynewsbin.com/about/ ].

Here’s a long list of articles in which Daily News Bin has praised or defended Bernie Sanders

By Bill Palmer
April 7, 2016

When you enter the race for President you’re asking to be made the most powerful person in the world. Of the twenty-five people who ran in the 2016 race, it’s going to end badly for twenty-four of them, and most of them are going to say and do objectively embarrassing things in their desperate final month. I’ve never been a afraid to be a harsh grader when the facts say it’s appropriate. Bernie Sanders is now in that desperate final stretch where he’s throwing Hail Mary passes that are mostly backfiring. Daily News Bin’s recent coverage of him has appropriately been mostly negative. That’s caused some of his fans to claim that we’re not being fair, or that we’re somehow in the tank for his opponent, who happens to be doing far better by any factually objective measure.

On the chance that these criticisms are being made in an earnest fashion, I’d like to remind everyone involved that back when Bernie Sanders was running a clean campaign of ideas and he was having good days, our coverage of him was far more positive. In that regard here are twelve articles in which Daily News Bin has given Bernie Sanders positive coverage, or praised him, or defended him. I could have dug up fifty such articles if need be, but I trust a dozen will suffice to prove my point. Click the bold text links to check out the articles:

1. In this article we defend a Bernie Sanders volunteer against false claims [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/donald-trump-jr-falsely-claims-woman-giving-hitler-salute-at-rally-was-a-bernie-sanders-plant/24115/ ] being made about her by a rival campaign.

2. Although the skewed coverage on cable news has routinely suggested otherwise, Bernie Sanders has held a lead in very few state polls during this election. Polling is rarely done in caucus states, which have accounted for most of his wins. Unless I’m failing to recall an earlier poll, he’s only held state polling leads in Wisconsin (win), New Hampshire (win), Vermont (win), Iowa (loss), Nevada (loss) and West Virginia (undetermined). We’ve reported on them [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/bernie-sanders-opens-up-massive-leads-in-vermont-and-west-virginia/23927/ ] accordingly.

3. Here we defend Bernie against a false controversy that sprung up on Twitter. This is notable because while the incident was controversial enough to be a trending topic, we were nearly the only news outlet [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/republicans-dishonestly-edit-video-to-make-it-appear-bernie-sanders-bailed-on-town-hall-early/23876/ ] to defend him on this.

4. When Bernie Sanders carved out his position on the Supreme Court nomination saga, we gave it a full hearing [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/bernie-sanders-urges-his-fellow-senators-to-confirm-president-obamas-supreme-court-nominee/23828/ ].

5. Here we defend Bernie Sanders after he’s attacked [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/donald-trump-owes-bernie-sanders-an-apology-after-gas-chamber-insult/23635/ ] for being Jewish.

6. Here we defend Bernie again, against dishonest attacks [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/donald-trumps-lies-about-bernie-sanders-arent-fooling-anyone/23373/ ] from Donald Trump.

7. And then we defended Bernie [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/donald-trump-tries-to-hit-back-at-bernie-sanders-but-ends-up-getting-berned/23370/ ] yet again.

8. After the Bernie Sanders campaign was caught in a data breach so severe that it had to fire a high ranking staffer, we suggested that Hillary Clinton owed him a free pass [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/after-data-breach-hillary-clintons-smart-move-is-to-let-bernie-sanders-back-into-the-campaign/23298/ ] on it after he had given her a free pass on her email.

9. Here we wrote a fun article highlighting how Bernie Sanders felt about Larry David’s impression [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/bernie-sanders-approves-of-larry-davids-snl-impersonation/22862/ ] of him on Saturday Night Live.

10. Here we praise Bernie Sanders yet again [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/bernie-sanders-drops-the-hammer-on-jeb-bush-over-racist-remarks/22584/ ].

11. And then there was the time we referred to Bernie Sanders as a “man of integrity” in a headline [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/bernie-sanders-proves-hes-a-man-of-integrity/22815/ ].

12. When it came to light that Bernie had been arrested while protesting for civil rights, we praised [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/bernie-sanders-should-be-applauded-for-his-arrest-in-1963/22623/ ] him for it in a headline.

As I said, I could dig up dozens more such articles from our archives, such as this one [ http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/bernie-sanders-rally-in-los-angeles-had-11000-more-people-than-the-building-could-hold/21551/ ] which concludes with “when eleven thousand people are willing to stand in a parking lot just to hear the man speak, he and his message can’t be ignored by anyone involved.”

I understand that fans of Bernie Sanders are frustrated at how his campaign is falling mathematically out of contention, and that they’d rather believe the false hope being dished out by the campaign and the misleading math being offered by cable news. They don’t want to hear that his recent wins in small states are just for show (for the record we predicted all of them in advance based on format and demographics), and that the small wins aren’t mathematically putting him back into contention. Clinging to hope is their prerogative. But our job is to cover a campaign on the basis of how well it’s doing, not how well its supporters wish it were doing.

Daily News Bin was also hard on Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, Martin O’Malley, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, and various other 2016 candidates during the ugly final losing month of their campaigns. Interestingly, none of their supporters threw a social-media-wide fit about our coverage. Now that Bernie Sanders is losing badly and flailing as well, we’re simply reporting on him accordingly. To see that the accuracy of our reporting is not biased against him, one need only look at the positive coverage we were giving him back when his campaign was still having good days and doing positive things.
