SANTA CLARITA, CA--(Marketwired - April 05, 2016) - BioSolar, Inc. (BSRC), developer of breakthrough energy storage technology and materials, announced today that Dr. Sung-Jin Cho, an internationally recognized lithium-ion battery expert, will serve as a Technology Advisor to the Company, effective immediately.
In this capacity, Dr. Cho will provide leadership in commercialization planning and prototyping for the Company's Super Battery technology, a patent-pending novel cathode based on inexpensive conductive polymers and organic materials that can fully utilize the storage capacity of conventional anodes to lower cost and increase the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Dr. Cho provides BioSolar with extensive experience and knowledge gained from working alongside innovative battery technology developers for over 20 years.
Dr. Cho is an Assistant Professor at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where he has also served as Director of Nano Energy Laboratory since August 2014. Prior to this current position, Dr. Cho was a technical lead at Johnson Controls Inc., Battery Technology Center, Milwaukee, WI, from 2008 to 2014. He led the USABC (United State Advanced Battery Consortium) program to design and evaluate battery material and lithium-ion cell engineering for automotive application for over six years. Prior to pursuing his PhD in the United States, Dr. Cho had worked on lithium-ion battery technology development in Korea since 1998 and held a number of positions at LG.
Dr. Cho earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University in 2009, studying the subject of Electronic Material under the supervision of Dr. Martin Seitz. Dr. Cho's research focuses on nanostructured and multifunctional materials with an emphasis on practical applications for energy storage devices. His research encompasses fundamental materials studies such as catastrophic failure mechanism study, synthesis and physical characterization, as well as device and system design and fabrication. Dr. Cho received a number of research innovation awards from Johnson Controls Inc.; the best poster award from Nanomanufacturing Conference 2015; published numerous peer-reviewed papers; and delivered over 20 presentations at domestic and international conferences.
"We are excited to welcome Dr. Cho to our team, and expect him to have an immediate impact in strengthening our strategic commercialization planning and prototyping activities," said Dr. David Lee, CEO of BioSolar. "His experience in developing high energy lithium batteries and process development draws many parallels to what we are seeking to do at BioSolar. We are confident that his addition to the scientific team will positively support and complement our activities at UCSB, bringing us one step closer to achieving our corporate objectives."
BioSolar is currently funding a sponsored research program at the University of California, Santa Barbara ("UCSB"), to further develop its super battery technology. The lead inventors of the technology are UCSB professor Dr. Alan Heeger, the recipient of a Nobel Prize in 2000 for the discovery and development of conductive polymers, and Dr. David Vonlanthen, a project scientist and expert in energy storage at UCSB.
