Athx appears to have failed to explicate in PRINT the apparent paradoxical DELAYED MECHANISM of efficacy in the multistem data at 90 vs 365 days.
Leaving room for confusion in the ACUTE vs Chronic mechanisms of disease in stroke.
Reduction in the BIO markers(cytokines IL-6,IL-12,TNFa etc)that generate inflammation and and infection were well documented (p=0.02) in the 90 day data set
.It is precisely this reduction in inflammation and secondary infections that set the stage for the stat.significant (p=0.02) 365 day 29% EXCELLENT clinical outcome subset(those who got multistem at< 36 hrs post stroke).
Also recent data on NEURONAL plasticity in basic neuroscience, documents a predictable stat. INTERACTION between reduced post stroke inflammation and infection, and the EFFICACY of behavioral rehabilation therapy at 365 days.
Unfortunately none of this was EXPLICITLY specified in the DISCUSSION section of the science presentations, of the paradoxical IMPROVEMENT at 365 days vs 90 days.
This left ROOM for lay commentary, on this paradoxical DELAYED mechanism of clinical EFFICACY ,by persons who LACKED a LIVELY SENSE of their EDUCATIONAL limitations.
