So why does Samsung do so well

Samsung has an extremely aggressive and well funded marketing machine, as you can see in Samsung's financials:

In the last quarter alone, out of 19.35 trillion KRW (~$16 BILLION) in operating expenses, only 17% was R&D, with the rest going to marketing, general & administrative.

Apple, in contrast, spent about $3.84 billion in marketing, general & administrative last quarter.

This is why even though Samsung can move a lot of product and be the top vendor in terms of unit sales, it doesn't make in profit before tax in a year what Apple rakes in after taxes in its peak quarter.

At this stage I would go for something like the Samsung Galaxy Note, coz I want the larger screen, but I am happy to hear about other Android based options.

LG G4 is an extremely nice phone, and the G5 (with upgraded everything) should be out soon (meaning either get the G5 or get the G4 on the massive discount that usually follows new Android device releases). LG makes really nice phones, had a chance to use a friend's G4 and I really appreciated how clean the UI was. Still no iOS, but much better than the TouchWiz crap that Samsung layers on top of Android.
