Wouldn't it have been better to trade Brett Gardner and keep Adam Warren?

Brian Cashman said he tried to acquire Castro at the trading deadline last season to take over at second base and came away thinking "we were potentially close.'' So he went into the offseason thinking a deal was possible.

But when he asked the Cubs about Castro early in the offseason, "they asked me about (Brett) Gardner, and I said no.''

Cashman said he wasn't aware the Cubs were targeting Ben Zobrist as a free agent, but "they began asking about (Adam) Warren. I didn't want to give him up, but they rejected a lot of proposals that I made. I couldn't get them off Warren for a month, so I finally agreed. It was tough to do but we think highly of Castro.

"We finally had a deal in place, but the Cubs said it was part of a larger strategy and couldn't sign off. I didn't know it was for Zobrist at the time. I just knew we had to wait 48 hours to finish the deal.''
