OD….that's a very good question…

I've known the guys at Redbend for many years….they were one of the recent Harmon acquisitions

http://www.redbend.com/en

and they have a very good track record of standardizing and then integrating their platform into the marketplace….mostly on the cellular side in the more traditional "M2M" market.

list of customers here:

http://www.redbend.com/en/company/who-we-work-with/our-customers

so….

"Combining InterDigital’s oneMPOWERTM IoT platform and HARMAN’s excellence in IoT systems integration and service management, the two companies will provide customers a unique way to accelerate the definition and deployment of tailored, scalable and interoperable IoT solutions aimed to maximize business results."

Harmon had most areas covered already for M2M type solutions, with a good face to the customer base.

Interdigital's oneMPOWER provides a standards based underlying platform… so I got a little confused in the PR when they state "a unique way to accelerate the definition and deployment"…. but I'm guessing the value to Harmon is to be able to support a growing number of customer's "dumb" devices in an architecture that provides greater overall interoperability going forward. To some degree Harmon may be giving up parts of their competitive barriers to be able to provide more "openness".

Currently Harmon/Redbend gets something per device for their software/device management, and some recurring service fee. So how does IDCC get paid? From the terminology used in the PR it could go a few different ways…but I might venture a guess that there will be something from Harmon when they connect solutions/devices through the platform (expecting they are "hosting" it). Any impact to wot.io? Will noodle that one…. maybe we'll get questions on the upcoming CC.
