You really should at least learn to use them. Like other trading disciplines, (think craps) you can get as involved as you feel comfortable. I use them to "protect" some investments and other times to "invest" or take out lottery tickets like that LinkedIn post. That is as rare as a lottery play too by the way. Nobody plays that far out of the money unless they are betting wild.
