Life is always cruel to the low end of the income spectrum...often with no segway to get out of that cycle. Some political ideologies would be happy to just let them die.

The "Apocalypse" as your writer calls it is SO regional. Empty shelves and store closings suggest that the local consumer is out of money...or so low that they need to be selective on where they put their assets...

I live in a region that struggles with finding a parking place at the Mall(s)...has a high minimum wage and is on track for $15/hr minimum...and if you're working for the minimum, you are spending it all. Supporting shops, stores and restaurants. The very places workers make minimums.

Parks and recreation facilities are full to overflowing with regular folks spending money...Local ski areas can't handle the load - parking, ski lift lines etc...

SO...your "Apocalypse" reporter is over stating the situation or in the famous words of Mark Twain, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated..."
