A man fearing mass shootings brought a gun into a Washington [state] movie theater and accidentally shot a woman before running away, police said.
Dane Gallion, 29, told Renton police that he was “concerned about recent mass shootings in public places” when he armed himself Thursday for a showing of "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” according to a probable-cause statement [ http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/crime/suspect-in-renton-theater-shooting-says-he-feared-random-attacks/ ] obtained by the Seattle Times.
Instead of protecting himself, or anyone else, police say he created mass hysteria when he accidentally fired into the chair ahead of him, shooting a 40-year-old woman in her torso.

NRA Takes Aim At Australia Again, Misses

By Eoin Blackwell
Posted: 22/01/2016 11:55 AEST Updated: 22/01/2016 17:34 AEST

The National Rifle Association has taken aim at Australia's gun buy-back scheme in a dramatic scare ad drawing on 20-year-old information.

The video, which takes clips of US President Barrack Obama and his potential democrat successor, Hillary Clinton, was posted on Youtube by the powerful pro-gun lobbyists on Wednesday.

NRA
@NRA
Don’t let Australia-style #guncontrol come to America! #2A http://nraila.org/australia
4:21 PM - 21 Jan 2016
[ https://twitter.com/NRA/status/690298078968963072 (with comments)]

"Certainly, the Australian example is worth looking at," Mrs Clinton says in the clip, before the video goes on to show a montage of newspaper clips from 1996-1997 alerting people to the impending buy back.

The gun buy back and tough national firearms legislation was introduced by the Howard Government in 1996 in response to the Port Arthur massacre, after Martin Bryant killed 35 people during a shooting spree in Tasmania's south.

A service will be held [ http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-20/20-year-commemoration-of-port-arthur-massacre/7100494 ] at Port Arthur on April 28 to mark the 20th anniversary of the massacre.

Changing Australia's gun laws has attracted limited political support -- despite the fact there have been no mass shootings since.

Pro-gun NSW Liberal Democrats senator David Leyonhjelm appeared in an NRA video slamming Australia as a "nation of victims [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2015/11/17/david-leyonhjelm-nra_n_8580132.html ]".

"We love the NRA here in Australia amongst us gun owners and in fact we rely on you guys to also help us hold the line in Australia," he says in the clip.

The video, which so far has more than 18,000 [currently approaching 130,000] views and is likely aimed at a domestic U.S. audience, has attracted furious agreement and opposition in its comments section.

"My guns were actually purchased, primarily, to oppose my Government if ever it becomes too oppressive," wrote one user, while another said: "After reading those headlines in those Australian papers, just imagine our government trying that shit. Americans would go insane with rage. Not going to happen here without a blood bath".?

Yet another wrote: "Australia confiscated all guns, and it worked. No more mass shooting since the confiscation. NRA is just as bad as ISIS in terms of spreading violence. Its so sad that in US gun ownership is a right, but healthcare is a privilege. Shame on you NRA?".

But perhaps the sagest comment came from a user called normanfacy:

"Watch Aussie comedian Jim Jefferies talking about gun control Lol you will love it," normfacy wrote.

We tend to agree.

Jeffries hits the mark on "gun sense" with this deadly line:

“The main [argument for guns] is ‘I need it for protection. I need to protect me. I need to protect my family.’ Really? Is that why they’re called assault rifles? Is it? Never heard of these f---ing protection rifles you speak of.”

House Dem introduces the ‘Flamethrowers? Really? Act’ of 2016

By Steve Benen
01/27/16 10:05 AM

Ordinarily, one might not necessarily connect flamethrowers with contemporary American politics, but the devices have come up more than once lately.

Last summer, for example, Rand Paul put together some online videos in which he literally destroyed [ http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/nothing-says-presidential-chainsaw-stunt ] the U.S. tax code. Unconcerned with appearing presidential, the Kentucky Republican invited people to vote on their preferred method of attack: chainsaw, wood chipper, or flamethrower. (If you’re curious, the chainsaw was the most popular.)

The senator’s campaign hasn’t gone especially well, but the political relevance of flamethrowers has endured. Bloomberg Politics’ Josh Green published this eye-opening report [ http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2016-01-27/how-snl-s-seth-meyers-inspired-a-hilariously-named-bill-on-flamethrowers ] yesterday:

Eliot Engel, a Democratic congressman from New York, is a big Saturday Night Live fan and an even bigger fan of former “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Meyers. He also thinks flamethrowers are dangerous. These are the salient facts behind what is surely the best-named legislation in the history of the U.S. Congress – a bill (H.R. 4009) recently introduced by Engel called the “Flamethrowers? Really? Act.”

The bill, which would regulate flamethrowers like machine guns, came about after Engel discovered that flamethrowers are unregulated in all but two states, Maryland and California. You can even order them through the mail, a fact that left Engel incredulous. “It’s not something I’d thought about before,” he admitted, “because you’d just assume – right? – that flamethrowers would be regulated. It just causes you to scratch your head and say, ‘Really?’”

The “Really?” part of the equation may have been inspired by the Seth Meyers bit, but none of this is a joke. Obtaining an unregulated flamethrower is, in reality, surprisingly easy throughout most of the country, so the New York Democrat introduced legislation to add some federal restrictions. “Qualified law enforcement officers” would be exempt.

As of this morning, the “Flamethrowers? Really? Act” of 2016 – easily this Congress’ best legislative name – is pending at the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations, after having been introduced in mid-November.

It’s picked up three co-sponsors [ https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/4009/cosponsors ] – Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), and James McGovern (D-Mass.) – which probably won’t be enough to get congressional leaders’ attention, and in a Republican-led chamber, the bill’s prospects are poor.

But I’d nevertheless be interested in hearing from the NRA and its Republican allies about Americans’ constitutional right to an unregulated flamethrower.

Bill Shorten Slams Ted Cruz Over Claims Gun Laws Increased Rape In Australia

By Josh Butler
Posted: 28/01/2016 11:12 AEST Updated: 28/01/2016 12:43 AEST

EXCLUSIVE

Labor leader Bill Shorten has sent a fiery letter to Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz, after the U.S. Senator claimed Australia's 1996 gun buyback program led to an increase in rape [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2016/01/26/ted-cruz-australia_n_9083292.html ].

Cruz, polling at second place in the Republican presidential field [ http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/26/politics/donald-trump-ted-cruz-polling/ ] with 19 percent in a recent poll, said in an interview on January 12 [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/01/25/ted-cruzs-claim-that-sexual-assaults-rate-went-up-significantly-after-australian-gun-control-laws/ (the complete interview in the YouTube above)] that Australia's gun reforms after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre led to a jump in sexual assaults.

"After Australia did that [gun buyback program], the rate of sexual assaults, the rate of rapes, went up significantly, because women were unable to defend themselves," Cruz said.

Cruz was widely lambasted, with the Washington Post's fact-checker labelling the assertion a "four Pinocchio" or "whopper" of a claim, finding no evidence to support the claim.

After the claim was covered in Australian media in recent days, opposition leader Shorten wrote an admonishing letter to Cruz.

"These claims are both offensive and incorrect," Shorten wrote in the letter, shared exclusively with The Huffington Post Australia.

"After a terrible massacre at Port Arthur in 1996, where one gunman murdered 35 innocent people with semi-automatic weapons, Prime Minister John Howard and Opposition Leader Kim Beazley (later to serve as Ambassador to the United States) took swift, bipartisan action to tighten gun ownership restrictions in our country. This was indisputably the right thing to do."

Shorten commented that he thought the gun reforms were Howard's "finest achievement in office".

"Contrary to your comments, reducing the number and restricting the availability of semi-automatic weapons did not lead to an increase in the rates of violent crime, rape or sexual assault," Shorten continued.

"I urge you to study our example in detail before you pass comment on our system again. Please do not misrepresent the success of Australia’s gun reforms in a misguided defence of your own gun laws. Americans are entitled to know the truth - that the reforms to Australia’s gun laws are working and lives are being saved."

Medical Examiner: Dooley family members shot to death

The Dooley family: Cameron, Todd, Landon, Lori, and Brooke.
January 29, 2016
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Police have identified six family members killed in a domestic murder-suicide in Chesapeake.
Police say they were first called out to the 2300 block of Wildwood Road Wednesday around 3:35 p.m. to perform a welfare check on an individual. Upon arrival, police discovered the body of 22-year-old Landon Dooley inside. The residence was the home of Landon, his parents and his sister.
Further investigation led officers about a block away to the home of Landon's grandmother, not far from the Portsmouth city line at the intersection of George Washington Highway North and Wintergreen Drive. An armed person -- later identified as 26-year-old Cameron Dooley -- was barricaded inside. Cameron and Landon are brothers.
A police department spokeswoman says officers negotiated with the suspect for hours, and witnesses say they saw the SWAT team outside of the home. Police made their way inside early Thursday morning, where officers found five more bodies, including Cameron's.
Friends and neighbors tell 13News Now all six people were members of the Dooley family, who were prominent in the community and members of the Temple Baptist Church of Chesapeake. On social media, friends and surviving relatives have shown outpouring of grief and condolences for the Dooley family.

An Australian Teen Discussed 'Painting Islamic State Symbol on an Exploding Kangaroo'
January 28, 2016
As terrorist plots go, it's got to be one of the more unusual — an Australian teenager discussed packing a kangaroo full of explosives and painting it with the Islamic State's symbol before setting it loose on police officers, a Melbourne court heard on Thursday.
Sevdet Besim, 19, allegedly talked to a British teenager about the plot, which included plans to behead or run over at least one police officer during a parade on Anzac Day — an Australian remembrance day for veterans and soldiers killed in conflict.
The British boy, who cannot be named because he is only 15, was given a life sentence by a court in northern England in October 2015, after being convicted of sending thousands of messages to Besim and instructing him in a terrorist plot "shocking in its brutality and scope."
Besim pleaded not guilty to four counts of planning a terrorist attack, and will stand trial in the state of Victoria's supreme court. He also faces life imprisonment if found guilty.

FBI: Man Plotted Machine Gun Attack on Masonic Temple
Jan 27, 2016
A Milwaukee man wanted to storm a Masonic temple with a machine gun and kill at least 30 people in an attack he hoped would show "nobody can play with Muslims" and spark more mass shootings in the United States, federal agents said Tuesday after the man's arrest.
Federal prosecutors charged 23-year-old Samy Mohamed Hamzeh with unlawfully possessing a machine gun and receiving and possessing firearms not registered to him. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney, Dean Puschnig, didn't immediately respond to a question asking why charges were limited to gun possession. Hamzeh's attorney, federal defender Ronnie Murray, didn't immediately return email and voicemail messages left after business hours.
According to an FBI affidavit, agents were tipped off in September that Hamzeh planned to travel to Israel in October to attack Israeli soldiers and citizens in the West Bank. He abandoned those plans due to "family, financial and logistic reasons," the affidavit said, but refocused his efforts on a domestic attack.
