GOP “Thinkers” Discover They Are Tiny Minority of Party
January 22, 2016

The founder of the National Review William F. Buckley is famous for “reading” extremists like John Birchers and Ayn Rand out of the conservative movement.

And it’s important to remember that he ultimately failed miserably at this.

The Republican Party today is dominated by the Koch Brothers — two charming lads raised by a Nazi governess whose political activity was born out of their dad’s Bircherism — and a bunch of Gen Xers like Paul Ryan and Rand Paul whose first sexual experiences involved The Fountainhead, Murray Rothbard and gold.

Today’s GOP is littered with well-armed half-wits, conspiracy theorists and people who think gay people are ruining Christmas. And many of these people think that Donald Trump is a threat to the intellectual dignity of the conservative movement.

That’s why the conservative National Review has gathered a few dozen glimmering lights of the right like Glenn Beck to offer sternly written letters explaining why they are against Trump. The Editors of the magazine called him a “menace to American conservatism.”

And Trump called them “losers,” which is definitely technically true. The 60-year-old magazine last year became a non-profit because it’s that good at not making a profit.

The Republican National Committee responded by stripping the magazine of its role in an upcoming GOP debate due to a policy against participants having “a conscience.”

There are two things to take out of whatever stage of grieving the GOP is in over the realization that their party has been hijacked by a birther, which to anyone with dignity is like watching your new spouse leave your wedding reception with the DJ.

First, all of these guys will come around and be the world’s biggest Trump supporters by the first general election debate if Trump is the nominee. Politics is tribal and by “tribal” we mean “petty” and “small.” All of these guys want to work again and if they got on the Romney train, they’ll have Trump tattoos by October.

Finally, this — for actual committed conservatives — comes down to the Supreme Court. The right figured out that electing Republican presidents doesn’t shrink the government or undo civil rights, appointing maniacs to the Supreme Court does. That’s how the Voting Rights Act got gutted. That’s why a million Texans don’t have Medicaid.

The next president could be the first since Nixon to appoint four Supreme Court justices in one term, while self-destructing in a ball of self-delusion and shame.

“True” conservatives are for Ted Cruz because they know he’ll appoint Supreme Court justices who will reverse Roe v. Wade and will possibly get rid of Social Security, Medicare and maybe even salad spit guards.

Trump could appoint anyone to the Court, from Gary Busey to Omarosa to someone with no discernible ideology or scruples whatsoever. Someone exactly like Donald Trump.
