'White people' dating website founder: It's not meant to be racist
BY DANIEL WOODRUFF
MONDAY, JANUARY 4TH 2016

(KUTV) The founder of a controversial dating website in Utah says it's not meant to be racist and that anyone is welcome to join.

"We don't want to encourage racism in either direction," said Sam Russell, founder of WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com. "If it's good for one it's good for the other. Let's not turn it into a racist issue."

Russell, who has spent his career selling cars, told 2News in an interview Monday he came up with the idea for the website while sitting sick at home watching television and seeing a number of advertisements for targeted dating sites like BlackPeopleMeet.com and ChristianMingle.com.

He said he decided, why not a site for white people to meet up?

"The right that exists for a black dating website to be there, the same right exists for a white dating website to be there," he said.

Russell, who lives in Bountiful, came up with the plan for his new Internet company and its name - a name he admits was designed to stir up attention.

"It was an inexpensive way for us to begin marketing and we hoped that it would draw some attention and get some media buzz," Russell said.

It did. 2News reported on a billboard that popped up last week in West Valley City on S.R. 201 advertising the site. The story eventually spread to media outlets across the world.

The new site had relatively few users last week, but the number of total members had jumped to more than 1,225 as of Monday afternoon. The founder said his company dealt with a number of server issues over the weekend due to the increased interest.

"Unbelievable, it's been crazy," Russell said. "The response has been overwhelming."

But not all feedback has been positive. Several people told 2News last week they found the site - and the billboard - repulsive. Some used the words "stupid," "negative," and "inflammatory" to describe it. Others on social media defended the site and its right to exist.

Russell insists the site has nothing to do with race and is open to anyone regardless of race. He also said the site will be moderated for racist comments or photos.

"We're not racist in any way, shape or form," he said. "It's just all about a true business concept and the right to do it - the right to do it without having to be accused of anything."

Russell said he plans to market the site across the country.
