The City of Woodland, North Carolina, has rejected approval for the installation of solar panels surrounding a power substation, after residents complained that the solar panels would suck-up all of the sunlight and likely cause cancer.

Jane Mann a retired "science teacher" was concerned that photosynthesis, which depends upon sunlight, would not happen with solar panels in their community and would keep the vegetation from growing. She also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her that solar panels didn’t cause cancer.

Strata Solar representative Brent Niemann, said the only sunlight the panels use to generate power is that which hits them directly and they don't suck-up additional sunlight from the surrounding area and solar panels do not cause cancer.”

But the Woodland City Council remained convinced of the life-threatening danger posed by solar panels. When Mayor Kenneth Manual called for the vote, it was was 3-1 against, with the council later voting for a moratorium on any future solar farms.
