Friday November 20, 2015, Baltia Airlines maiden ship N706BL, utilizing it's recently issued new call letters BTL, flew from Willow Run Airport to Oscoda Wurtsmith Airport (Tracked by Flight Aware below).
To understand the significance, one needs to be aware that in its quest for FAA Certification, Baltia Air Lines is using 3 Airport locations, each providing it's own specific benefit and purpose.
* (KJFK) - John F. Kennedy International Airport - New York City, New York * (KYIP) - Willow Run Airport - Ypsilanti, Michigan * (KOSC) - Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport - Oscoda, Michigan
John F. Kennedy International Airport Location of BLTA Headquarters. Also location of hub flight origins, BLTA Inaugural Launch of Non-Stop New York to St. Petersburg Russia Route. Followed by expansion of New York to Moscow, Kiev, Riga and Minsk Routes.
Willow Run Airport BLTA Base of Operation. BLTA performing FAA Certification via Eastern Michigan Flight Standards District Offices (EM-FSDO). Willow Run is also base of Kalitta Airlines run by Connie Kalitta. Connie Kalitta is guiding, advising BLTA through the FAA Certification Process. Much of BLTA Crew Training is done by Kalitta at Willow Run. Kalitta does light maintenance on it's own fleet as well as BLTA.
Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport 200 miles north of Willow Run in Michigan is an old Air Force Base that Kalitta purchased and converted into Fleet Heavy Maintenance and Plane Storage. Kalitta has performed much maintenance here for BLTA such as engine changes, scheduled C-Checks and D-Checks. Until it's recent Willow Run stay, N706BL was also stored in Oscoda (less expensive) by Kalitta. When BLTA needs more than light work such as a Nose Gear Upgrade and Proving Flight Preparations, it is done in Oscoda, where Kalitta has the facilities, staff and technical expertise to perform.
