Disagree on lack of news. The rise from $3 to $9 was news fueled the entire way with big pops at 100m pounds marked and especially after the vandalia acquisition. A stock can move in momentum for several days or weeks after news as well.

A pump was not needed. Retail and momentum and technical traders were buying off of a great month of news, dr Hayward called up Maxim and scheduled November conference calls, meanwhile Maxim, pumpstopper, and their associates sold short to to the retail buyers, then boom! Pumpstopper (formerly known as Mako Research) article hit. The rest of the story you know.
