If I were to hedge an experienced guess, they found out that retailer POS systems were unable to display a scannable QR code on their system screens. The other issue is that it would be entirely insecure to display a 'secure' QR code on a screen that could be read by anyone near the screen.

The latest that I have read is CurrentC will have to go the NFC route and their CEO is no longer ruling it out. That also has its problems since only about 10% of terminals today can do an NFC scan. That percent is not expected to increase this year as retailers are being forced to pay for software and hardware upgrades for chip cards. This may be a bit old fashioned, but for a US launch in 2016, their path of least resistance is a good old fashioned plastic card. But, it is certainly not very sexy.
