Why are you assuming this is due to shorters? The price action is just as likely due to longs giving up. Low volume means there are very few buyers -- even at these bargain prices.

I love how people still talk about "market makers' tricks" even though almost all market making today is done by high frequency trade bots, which simply try to spot a trend or front run a big trade 5 milliseconds before anybody else.
