Maybe the republican party is finally ready to actually split in two... the Governing Group, willing to work with the opposition to make things work through compromise and deal-making, and the Toddler Group, the obstructionists who either get all their way or else gridlock or shut down the government. Both would lose their clout, but might be the only way the deadpeckers can be pruned out of the congress.

A formally split congress might make governing possible again. And increase the chances that many of the truly crazy ones might be exposed for what they are, enough to be voted off the island.
