One further note on this subject. All these examples of leverage can be done by any entity (corp, partnership, llc, etc). These types of ventures are not limited to holding companies. By the way, the main difference in a holding company and any other corporation holding subsidiaries is that the holding company doesn't actually operate a "business."

Berkshire Hathaway isn't extremely valuable because of "leverage." It is valuable because it owns so many valuable investments.
