As you’re aware, the DARK Act could soon take away our right to know what’s in the food we feed our families and ourselves. Thank you for your continued fight in support of mandatory GMO labeling. But the use of GMOs across the country doesn’t endanger only human health—it affects the entire ecosystem. That's why we have partnered up with Friends of the Earth. Click here to stand with JLI and Friends of the Earth to oppose Monsanto’s RoundUp® and protect the endangered monarch butterflies! With the increase in genetic engineering of foods has come increased usage of glyphosate, trade-name Roundup®, the agricultural herbicide manufactured by Monsanto. American growers sprayed 280 million pounds of glyphosate on their crops in 2012, according to U.S. Geological Survey data. That amounts to nearly a pound of glyphosate for every person in the U.S. The increase in the use of this herbicide has endangered the monarch butterfly. Last winter, the number of monarchs migrating to Mexico was the smallest ever recorded. Click here to oppose Monsanto’s RoundUp® and protect the endangered monarch butterflies! Why are these beautiful, iconic creatures declining so rapidly? The leading factor is the loss of their breeding habitat and food. Across the Midwest, millions of acres of “Roundup® Ready” GMO crops engineered to withstand massive amounts of Monsanto’s Roundup® have been planted along the monarch’s migration route—virtually wiping out milkweed, the only food young monarchs eat. In the last 20 years the number of monarch butterflies has declined by 90 percent. That is one more reason to reduce cultivation of GMOs. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has the power to help. It could restore essential monarch habitat nationwide—by giving the monarch butterfly protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. But we need your help to protect this essential pollinator for future generations. Please stand with us in the fight to protect our health, the environment and all creatures affected by the growth of GMOs by taking action today! Thank you.
