Former Bega Cheese chief executive and confessed paedophile Maurice Van Ryn has been
sentenced to 13 years in jail, with a non-parole period of seven years, for multiple child sex offences.

Van Ryn pleaded guilty to the abuse of nine boys and girls between 2003 and 2014 on the New South Wales South Coast.

His victims were aged between eight and 15.

Judge Clive Jeffreys gave Van Ryn a 25 per cent reduction on his sentence for pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

The court heard Van Ryn abused children in the lounge room and spa of his large home and was "a father figure and role model" to at least one boy he abused.

Van Ryn formed a friendship with another of his victims when the boy was just 10 and bullied at school.

The abuse began with Van Ryn rubbing the boy's thigh and escalated over the next four years.

The 59-year-old performed oral sex on the boy on a number of occasions and showed him pornography.

On an interstate trip to watch a sporting match, Van Ryn gave the boy alcohol and anally raped him.

Judge did not 'take grooming into account'

However Judge Jeffreys told the court: "I do not propose to take grooming into account."

Victims' friends and families sitting in court shook their heads.

Van Ryn had earlier told the court that his abuse of children was "a few moments of stupidity".

When questioned by the Crown about the serious nature of the acts, Van Ryn said "with nine or 10 of those activities it was less than a minute".

Judge Jeffreys said Van Ryn was a person of "good character" and "has shown deep contrition".

"On immediately becoming aware of complaints, he admitted his wrongdoing and went to seek psychiatric help," the judge said.

"It's clear in his psychiatric report that the offender has shown contrition."

Van Ryn is taking anti-libidinal drugs.

Judge Jeffreys said he had been progressing "extremely well" on the treatment.

"[Van Ryn] has reasonable prospects of not offending while he's on that treatment," the judge said.

The parent of one victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said while Van Ryn was given a relatively tough sentence under current laws, the legislation needed to change.

"Let's remind ourselves this man is a rapist, a multiple rapist of children and the offence for that should be much higher than it currently is in NSW," he said.
