Global financial markets enter September under heavy pressure, with Dow futures plummeting more than 300 points on new concerns about China's economy. The Dow closed out August with a triple-digit loss Monday, for its worst month in more than five years. (CNBC)

The Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq each lost more than 6 percent in August, heading into September which has a long-running history as the worst-performing month of the year for stocks. The S&P and Nasdaq had their worst months in more than three years. (CNBC)

New data today on China's manufacturing sector showed a further loss of momentum-pushing the recently-battered Shanghai composite down 1.3 percent at the close after tumbling as much as 5 percent earlier. (CNBC)

Japanese stocks were harder hit on the day, with the Nikkei average tanking nearly 4 percent. Stocks in Europe were feeling the heat too, with the markets in Germany, the U.K., and France off more than 2 percent. (CNBC)

Oil fell this morning, but gave up only a fraction of the more than 27 percent rally over the past three sessions. Crude prices staged a major turnaround Monday, settling in New York up nearly 9 percent. (Reuters)

Hedge fund billionaires David Einhorn and Dan Loeb saw their main funds lose roughly 5 percent each in August during the dramatic market selloff. Einhorn's Greenlight Capital has fallen 13.8 percent for the year. Loeb's Third Point has gained 1.2 percent in 2015. (Reuters)

Apple (AAPL) is reportedly exploring a move into original programming to compete with Netflix (NFLX) and others. Apple has held preliminary talks with Hollywood in recent weeks to gauge interest. (Variety)

Expanding its foothold in the enterprise arena, Apple is teaming up with Cisco Systems (CSCO) to improve the performance of its iPad and iPhone devices on the networking giant's corporate network. (Reuters)

Samsung has unveiled its latest smartwatch, the Gear S2, which offers a version with 3G connectivity. The device can be used without being tethered to a smartphone, a restriction of the Apple Watch. (CNBC)

The White House is preparing sanctions on Chinese individuals and companies, in an effort to pressure Beijing to stop its alleged cyber theft of commercial and economic information from U.S. organizations. (FT)

On the second of a three-day trip to Alaska to highlight climate change challenges, President Barack Obama today plans to propose an effort to gain a foothold in the rapidly changing Arctic. (NY Times)

Since Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker called himself "aggressively normal" during the first 2016 Republican presidential debate, his poll ratings have gone in the wrong direction. He spoke with CNBC about how he's trying to change that.

BY THE NUMBERS

Concern over global growth could mean more attention than usual for today's U.S. economic numbers. The Institute for Supply Management is out with its August manufacturing index at 10 a.m. ET, with forecasts calling for a reading of 53.0, nearly identical to July's 52.9 level.

The government, also at 10 a.m. ET, issues July construction spending numbers, which are expected to show a 0.5 percent increase following a June rise of 0.1 percent.

U.S. automakers are out with their August sales numbers throughout the morning, with the industry seen posting a seasonally adjusted annual sales rate of 17.2 million vehicles.

Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren, a non-voting member on the central bank policy committee, delivers a speech in New York at 1:10 p.m. ET-an address scrutinized for interest rates clues ahead of the Fed's meeting later this month.

Retailer Dollar Tree (DLTR) is among the few companies out with quarterly earnings this morning, while H&R Block (HRB) and Bob Evans Farms (BOBE) are on the short list of after-the-bell reports for today.

STOCKS TO WATCH

Bank of America's (BAC) plan to combine the chairman and CEO roles is drawing opposition from California pension funds Calpers and CalSTRS. The move will be the subject of a shareholder vote at a special meeting later this month.

M&T Bank (MTB) settled a lawsuit charging lending bias in the New York City market. The bank agreed to improve its mortgage lending policies in a settlement with the nonprofit Fair Housing Justice Center.

Chipotle (CMG) was sued over claims that its food does not contain genetically modified organisms. The plaintiff claims Chipotle's offerings are not, in fact, GMO-free. The restaurant chain plans to fight the suit.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) is buying the rights to AstraZeneca's (AZN) experimental psoriasis drug Brodalumab, several months after Amgen (AMGN) dropped out.

Steven Cohen's Point72 Asset Management disclosed a 5.1 percent stake in solar energy company SunEdison (SUNE).
