Deserts rarely get storm track over them normally calm weather pattens under High Pressure systems, I said there was talk about catching low level storm jets when a storm or tropical system passes threw the area which is rarely, Now back to your statement of wind atop sucking air out it could also be redirected to go down when prevailing winds are present
