This just in... DPP-4 inhibitors may cause severe joint pain. Januvia accounted for 28 of the reported cases according to FDA. This is yet another example of why the side effects of commonly used diabetes medications are important to the Sucanon discussion. Sulfonylureas cause weight gain and typically lose effectiveness over time as the ability to stimulate increased insulin production from the beta cells of the pancreas tapers off. Other insulin sensitizers such as Rezulin were pulled from market due to liver issues, and Januvia and members of the same class (gliptins) have some joint pain issues noted above. That leaves metformin as one of the few oral medications for non insulin dependent diabetes. Thus, in my opinion, a good opportunity for Sucanon in the "prediabetic" or early diabetes situation.
