TurboTax imports the buy/sell data from your broker. Brokers typically provide this data in an export form and TurboTax makes this seamless. You just provide a connection to your broker and TurboTax grabs it all and takes care of your gains and losses.

If there is a trade where it can't get the basis, it will flag the trade for you to enter the data manually. For me, these are usually ESPP shares and options that expire worthless. If you trade frequently, the cost of TurboTax Premier is tiny compared to the labor to enter this stuff all by hand.
