Federal case depositions are 7 hours in length (most usually under the FRCP and also in California).

You typically will use AT LEAST 4 hours of prep for every hour of depo you take (minimum) - so that's 35 hours of attorney time for ONE depo and prep. Say they are using a cheap lawyer - with a low billing rate of $300. That's $10,500 nott even including the travel costs, lodging, meals, expenses (taxis, car rental, copying fees, office supplies) for the one lawyer alone (assuming s/he doesn't take a paralegal or associate along).

Neow, you've gott to pay for a reporter, videographer, transcripts, and potentially a conference room rental because you don't want to do depos in the adverse party's counsel's law offices.

You've blown through $20K and that's just ONE deposition.
