I believe your point does not escape most...but the model is not new to MSFT...but is the future...

some say they would rather rent as they go and only pay for what they use, then buy up-front and buy for updates...

...but in the end all SW companies are going to rent in the cloud, and you will pay for only what you consume...but be tied to those you rent from...that is the model. That is the future...as an investor, its good that MSFT has finally stepped into the future...(Post Ballmer disaster)
