Stan Lee: Stan Lee Media

While we now see Stan Lee as the Godfather of Marvel, back in 1998 Stan Lee was busy with the superhero-themed Web site Stan Lee Media. With Disney-level talents on his side, going bankrupt at the beginning of the millennium was clearly not part of Lee’s plan for the company. Between multiple lawsuits against Marvel, Disney, and others, and failed attempts at making new superhero series and more Conan the Barbarian movies, the Internet company's only success would be engaging in constant legal battles with its creator (Stan Lee cut ties with S.L.M. in 2001). With great power supposedly comes great responsibility, but with only $1 million in revenue by 2001—a twentieth of what it took to produce the site’s content—somebody in the company kind of forgot about that.
