Titan Machinery is the world's largest farm equipment dealer for CNH Industrial, and for any ag equipment manufacturer. The international fleet of stores has declined since a high of 120 but still stands at 108 stores internationally, including this ag center in rural Moorhead, Minn. WEST FARGO, N.D. — As the nation’s ag economy experiences lower commodity prices, leaders of the world’s biggest string of farm machinery dealers have faced the challenges head on.

David Meyer, 62, CEO of Titan Machinery Inc. in West Fargo, N.D., says his company has already made proactive adjustments in the past two years. The company continues to manage inventories and is earning cash, he says.

Titan has been in the news lately for consolidating and reducing its workforce to maintain profit margins during the industry’s slump.

“When you see some of those trends, you’ve got to make sure that headcount matches,” Meyer says.

Bloggers and social media entries have raised questions about the health of the company on the heels of shrinking inventory and layoffs, but Meyer says some bloggers have financial motives.

“You have to react by simply running your business and doing the right things,” he says.

Titan has chains in 108 locations in the U.S. and abroad. That’s down slightly from about 120 in early calendar year 2013, but is still big enough to rank as the largest Case-IH dealer network in the world, and the biggest network of any ag equipment manufacturer. In the U.S., the company has 64 ag stores and 28 construction stores, and another 16 locations in Eastern Europe.

Titan has also recently announced a major shift in management.

As of June 1, cofounder Peter Christianson moved from being Titan’s president to leading the company’s international operations. He will begin a three-year consulting position Feb. 1.
