Oncolytics (NASDAQ:ONCY), a small Canadian company founded in 1998 out of work done on viral oncotherapy at University of Calgary by Dr Matt Coffey, is developing Reolysin, an attenuated reovirus product that can transverse the blood stream and selectively kill cancer cells regulating the Ras growth pathway. Since about 75% of all cancer cells show the Ras pathway, Reolysin has a broad scope as a dual therapy with recognized cytokines, demonstrated by the 6 ODDs it has received for various types of cancer.

My interest stems from the ultra low valuation of ONCY (less than $100 million, trading at 58 cents), the fact that Amgen is developing a similar but less effective drug which may receive market approval before year end, and the high safety profile and decent efficacy profile of Reolysin as demonstrated in over 30 trials conducted till date, many of them sponsored by government agencies. ONCY has 375 worldwide patents, with 56 US patents protecting its iP for many years.
