This article says TD Ameritrade does offer to take worthless securities off your books.

But again, this is wholly unnecessary as SPNG is a worthless security as of the Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Get a new tax advisor - the one who told you that SPNG could not be written off as a worthless security is worthless as a tax advisor.
