"If there was ever a time for Congress to act on homeownership reform, that time is now. What really would heal the housing market in low-income communities is reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It is undisputed that without these government-sponsored enterprises the private market would rarely, if ever, invest in many of these struggling communities. Instituting important reforms within the GSEs and allowing them to rebuild capital is a critical step for the Obama administration. It is a step that they must take soon, not only for the betterment of communities like in Lithonia, Ga., but for the overall improvement of our local and national economy. Homeownership builds wealth, and building wealth among our communities of color is a central goal for this president. Let’s make sure the tools are at hand for success before this administration ends.
