The cork is going to be laid up for a period of time starting this Friday. It seems I've got a pretty good size tumor, and the first phase of treatment is about to begin. I don't know what the future holds, but nothing would please me more than knowing the board is gonna carry on with or without me.
I've tried to make the board a politically savvy, interesting, and educational place for mining people to hang out and use the resources we've assembled.
The name of the game is to make it interesting, and a place people want to come to. Here's a few of the tips and tricks I've incorporated to make us stand apart from less interesting boards.
1. Relevant news stories. Be aware of media bias. Most of the mainstream "news" (like Bloomberg for example) is bull shit. We've got to be smarter than that. Some of it can't be avoided of course, but we should at least know the difference. Have you contributed a news story recently?
2. Visual interest (A) Pictures - Please try to throw in as many pictures as possible. People love and learn from pictures.
3. Visual Interest (B) IHUB Tools. Please try to utilize all the free tools at our disposal. Bold, Italic, underline, COLORS, quotes, all that stuff. Each post is potentially a work of art! The Board Library may be my masterpiece LoL! You wouldn't believe the underlying code behind the clickable links LoL! There is a balance between boring and going overboard of course, but you can always tell the difference between who is in a big hurry and who really cares about what they are trying to post! 4. Visual Interest (C) use of emoticons - We've got a pretty good library of both basic
and animated 
emoticons. Does everybody know how to use them?
These are all small things, but they make the difference between cool and BORING !
5. The opening line. The first 5 or 6 words of each post are what show when you first open the board. They are like Headlines. So many people don't pay any attention to this aspect. I remember certain longs decrying basher tactics on a board I used to mod. They'd quote some miserable statement made by a basher in those first 5 or 6 words. ABSOLUTELY STUPID ! They end up doing the basher's job for them, reinforcing the statement made by the basher which is COMPLETELY contrary to the point they were trying to get across! Talk about unaware!
6. Use the other poster's name as often as you can, especially in those first 5 or 6 words! Everybody likes to see their own name! Just like if you are in a picture, ... where do you look first LoL?
7. Please welcome new posters. I like to acknowledge and welcome new posters to the board. Makes them more likely to return and contribute!
8. Picture of the Day, Thought for the Day, Centerfold of the Day etc. These are the recurring themes that go with our ~*~Mining and Metals Du Jour~*~ namesake. I'll need some volunteers to help here! Hopefully, these recurring themes are enjoyed by you and everybody else, and people want to see them again and again.
