Australia's iron ore miners have received a lift in morning trade after the price of the steel-making commodity rose overnight.

The iron ore price is trading around a four-month high of $US64.77 per tonne on Friday, more than 35 per cent above the 10 year low of $US47 in February.

Pure play iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group gained 3.1 per cent to $2.35 while mining giant Rio Tinto was one per cent higher at $57.33 and junior miner BC Iron was 1.3 per cent higher at 38.5 cents at 1035 AEST.
