Netflix was a rent to see, or own at a discount brick and mortar facility and web presence.

That's where they got their start. Made sense because people didn't want to own dvds at full retail...and because movies were put on dvd w/i what? like 6 months later?

People started streaming illegally for free via web, meaning people were using Netflix less and less. Now, netflix is a legal way to stream. That isn't disruptive technology, that's survival.
