STANWOOD, Wash. -- Tom Sidick spent most of his life cutting things down, taking them apart, and selling them off, piece by piece.

Now, he's spending time putting the important parts back together.

Sidick, 34, owns a firewood company in Snohomish County. He was harvesting trees near his home near Lake Goodwin on March 26th.

One of them was leaning against the one he was taking down.

He heard nothing, but felt immediate pain.

"I felt a smash on the right hand side of me. Cut my face open, cut my lips open, and that was because it pushed me into my log," Sidick recalled. "They call them 'widowmakers.'"

Medics flew Sidick to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He spent weeks in the hospital, unable to move his hands or open his eyes.

"I know my brother came in and said prayer after prayer after prayer holding my hand," he said, wiping away tears. "I remember him saying, 'Tom, wake up. Get up. You're not dying. There's no way you're dying. You've got a lot of life to live.'"

Sidick's son, Ethan, would visit daily, singing songs to his unconscious father.

"Every day after school my grandma would pick me up. We'd drive straight to the hospital," Ethan said. "We'd say prayers to him and sometimes we'd play music."

Doctors said it was unlikely Tom would survive. They made incisions into his skull. They cut his throat open, put a tube inside.

Thousands from around the country sent prayers. Some donated money to a medical fund. And Sidick began to beat the odds.

He credits organic food, and being strong to begin with.

He also believes he survived for a reason.

"I just want to be here for my son. I think that's what life's about," he said. "I think that's why God came up to me and said, 'hey, mister, slow down.'"

Sidick would like to get his business back up and running, but is looking for someone to help him. With a birthday approaching, he says he has other priorities these days.

"I think that God saved me for a reason," he added. "maybe that's just to tell everybody that you all have a life here and it is to be around your family."
