The code that I've seen in the industry is typically written in scripting language with a lot of variable-length text fields and there are multiple passes via filters. Their expertise is in bio and they like a lot of flexibility.

A former co-worker was hired to standardize bio-scientists computing platforms. Their bio-scientists all had their own equipment, software and ways of doing things. They were not interested in changing their methods to suit the IT department. He wound up leaving as it was an unwinnable battle.

Biologists like flexibility. Computer Science folks like structure. Huge mismatch there.
