Small-scale version of SWET's proposed tower.
Try this. Get one of those small mister portable fans. A straw and small square of paper from the cash register at the bar.
Have someone hold the straw while you activate the mister fan. Make sure the fan is blowing across the top of the tower, er straw. Slowly lower the straw and fan to the square of paper. Watch it blow away... oh no wait it gets sucked up onto the straw.
You can repeat cutting the straw to a more appropriate size but you have to keep the squared end down each time. So don't cut this end and then that end. Always, cut the same end.
For those of you that do live in the desert try it this way. Aim the fan up. So that the evaporation will cool the air above the straw. Does the paper blow away under the straw? Does a little beed of water form in the straw?
Another, easy experiment is to take a to-go cup. Polystyrene non-environmentally friendly and cut off the bottom. Poke an exit hole near the lip, a very small one, and flip it over onto a piece of paper. Try the same things as above you will find for some angles of attack of the wind you can pick up the paper and for some you will get wind out that hole.
