If they pay over a billion for the company, they won't be sitting on it. They sit on average stuff that tends to take away from their market share. For example big pharma has a cure for specific allergies. They don't want that to hit the market because of the revenue garnered from allergy relief is far greater then the revenue that would be garnered from curing it. Same with the common cold. So, they shelve it.

Many Blue Chips are behind the curve when it comes to this new era of Wearables/IoT/Biomems. Many will crumble the way Kodak, Fuji, etc crumbled when they failed to grasp and prepare for the decline of film. Blue Chips will be fighting for smaller start-ups with tech that is years ahead of their own R&D departments.
