I reiterate that the "Contra Revenue" has nothing to do with lack of an integrated modem. The contra revenue has been used for Tablet devices, most of which do not even have a modem.

Yeah, more flexibility by sacrificing about 1000 times the die area and power.

No one is denying your assertion. However I have not talked about replacing the CPU,GPU or standard peripheral circuitry with FPGA. I am merely suggesting the addition of a small FPGA which could be used for user customization of extra peripheral circuitry, which would give Intel a competitive advantage, and the ability to easily modify the functionality.

However let us not get ahead of ourselves. First the merger has to happen, and then Intel has to see the wisdom of my suggestion. Mobile can benefit a lot. For larger devices, the user can easily add extra logic devices on the circuit board of the Intel processor chip for any new peripheral device. But for mobile devices that increases the board space and adds extra power which might make it impractical. Wearables and mobiles will want to explore new peripherals for monitoring health, or other exotic new sensors. The on chip FPGA would help in making such ideas easier to implement.
