For example different vendors may explore different displays, memory types and other peripheral devices. Yes Intel chipsets have traditionally filled the rule, but that takes more time.The contra revenue is a result of the Atom being optimized for typical Windows devices, and not for low end Android devices, and so Intel was forced to go the contra revenue route since the design tweaks were going to take too long.

Could you name a specific example of how an FPGA would have helped making Bay Trail a bigger success in the mobile market, where obviously an integrated modem was missing, the chip area was too large for low cost and the performance wasn't good enough for the high end?

And, besides all that, how does that justify buying Altera, when Intel already has their technology inside some server products and Altera is fully cooperating? What does Intel management bring to Altera making it a more successful company?
