As noted by others, server manufacturers have expressed a strong desire for a FPGA where they can customize the hardware for their requirements.

This and everything said that follows in what you said shows exactly why taking them over rather than just having a large investment and a partnership is a bad idea. It was all about how Altera could be used to help Intel's core product. There was nothing about developing Altera's market. They would become second class citizens in Intel subservient to x86. This is why even intel's foundries are a failure in the market. A takeover would reduce the overall value. I'm beginning to want to see the company split up so the bits of it can have some air to develop.
