I was a junior in high school that special Earth Day, we had a presentation in the auditorium, none of us had any idea how special the day would become.

The special tie in for me is that Denis Hayes was the main man in organizing the events across the nation that day. He had been hired by some senators to ramrod the effort. He was from my hometown, Camas WA, and sat in the pew in front of me many Sundays at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Little did I know what was ahead for him. Kind of ironic, as it turns out, he was the son of a paper mill worker, who made his family's income on the back of some very major pollution in our little town. At least they put in a car wash, so we could try to wash off the little pollution particles that built up on your car if you parked downtown for more than an hour. Of course we all breathed that stuff in too.

The day remains special to me. As a farming family, we made our life off the land, and I have always appreciated the bounty of the earth.
