“Requirement triggered by the TSA order”????…The lease has much more significance.

Implant Sciences and their technology will be in a King-of-the-Cage showdown for supreme ECP (Entry Control Point) ETD, that is to be published for the DoD and law enforcement entities – analogous to, maybe, a QPL for the DoD and law enforcement.

“The Explosive Detection Equipment-User Scenario Evaluation (EDE-USE) for trace, non-colorimetric systems and the Comparative Evaluation of Explosive Detection Systems for Use at Entry Control Points (ECP). The EDE-USE evaluation will serve as a platform to obtain subjective human factor data from the explosive detection user community in simulated operational scenarios. The ECP evaluation will include characterization of handheld and desktop trace detection systems to determine the limits and capabilities of each system as well as applicability for use at entry control points. The results from the evaluation will be published and available to Department of Defense (DoD) and law enforcement entities to assist with the selection of explosive detection equipment.”

Thus far two companies have been issued a lease and training Simplified Acquisition, one being IMSC, the other, FLIR Detection (FIDO X3 and Griffin 824).

Look at the list of companies that responded to SSN - N0017415SS001, seeking Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) or near-COTS trace explosive detection system that do not require operator interpretation of color changes for identification (non-colorimetric).

Who is listed first? All these entrants were evaluated with “assessment points”, and (IMO) they ranked them first to last – purposefully? The two companies (thus far) attending the King-of-the-Cage showdown are……Implant Sciences and FLIR Detection……the two at the top of the list.

The question is who will win? On the one hand, you have Implant Sciences with their arduous years of hunting perfection in the science of ETD, or an optical company chasing ETD with (and as near I can tell have sold a couple of machines) a mass spec machine that has no real credentials – remember: you can boast all you want but you still have to show up and race – and it doesn’t look as though the Griffin has done much racing…

they did win the 2013 GSN award for best Chemical detector…

https://twitter.com/flirdetection/status/410098984355495936

but they couldn’t seem to hold it in 2014!

Unlike Implant Science’s QS-B220 that has been vetted across the planet.

They are, however, assessing both the handheld and desktop units. The handheld offering from FLIR is the FIDO X3, a fluorescence based detection technology. I will stop right here - nothing else needs explaining as the cost of consumables will be astronomical. (just wish Implant Sciences new handheld was ready)

This will be fun as it may be concluded by the beginning of summer.
