PLYMOUTH – With drug overdoses rising statewide, the group appointed by the governor to develop a solution to the crisis is coming to Plymouth to listen and learn.

Gov. Charlie Baker’s Opioid Crisis Working Group will public hold a public session to gather feedback and ideas on halting the epidemic from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday (March 26) in Memorial Hall, at 83 Court St.

“In order to formulate solutions, we need to understand the depth of this devastating problem that is affecting families, friends and neighbors across the commonwealth,” Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders, who also serves as chairman of the working group, said in a statement. “This session will give us a chance to hear directly from those most impacted by this issue.”

Baker announced the organization of the group in February, six weeks after taking office.

group is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experience related to prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery, support and law enforcement. By the end of May, the group will submit a statewide strategy to combat opioid addiction and curb overdose deaths.

Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph McDonald is one of the 17 members of the group.

“It’s an unfortunate fact of life that Massachusetts, and the South Shore in particular, has not been spared from the opioid abuse epidemic,” McDonald said. “This is an opportunity to hear not only the scope of the problem but to offer answers.”

About 600 people turned out for the first two public dialogues held in Worcester and Greenfield. After this week’s Plymouth session, the group travels to Boston for an April 2 hearing in Gardner Auditorium in the Statehouse.

For those who cannot attend, an email box has been set up to collect comments at AddictionWorkGroup@state.ma.us. For a list of Opioid Crisis Working Group members or more information about the public dialogues or the group’s meetings, visit www.mass.gov/opioids.
