the temps where i live have broken records all through the winter. i only used about half the normal amount of firewood this year, and i heat with wood pretty much exclusively. I haven't talked about it much as it would just seem like gloating to the east coasters. Our first frost date last fall was nearly two months later than normal.

And now they are reporting that an El Nino is likely to persist into next winter, so probably another warm winter coming.

california is getting a lot of press for its drought, but this winter a couple Pineapple Expresses hit the northern part of the state and dumped a lot of water. It was warm and came as rain, resultant in a very low snowpack compared to average, which many areas are dependent upon for early summer water. Most of the reservoirs up here DID get recharged from the rain, but without snowpack they won't be replenished later in the summer. And even where there isn't a drought in california, irrigation is depleting aquifers at record pace.

80% of all water consumed in california is by agriculture. Beating on domestic users to squeeze out a couple percent improvement is almost meaningless unless coupled with some better conservation measures by the agriculture industry. Using huge amounts of water to grow rice when the price is depressed because of overproduction and then price supports kick in to make even wasteful farming profitable... the california drought "crisis" is mostly a spotlight on how water allocation to agriculture is a sacred cow. I realize that california produces a full 25% of america's food, but that could stand a bit of decentralization too, eh? some of the crops produced here which are water wasters could be grown in regions of the country where water is not a limiting factor. Just sayin'
